Trekkers are then divided into small groups of up to 8 people, each assigned to one of the park’s 12 habituated gorilla families. These groups vary in size and composition, ranging from dominant silverbacks, adult females, playful juveniles, and adorable infants.

As trekkers ascend, the landscape transforms from farmland and open meadows to a mist-shrouded, ancient forest teeming with life. The air is cool and crisp, filled with the calls of exotic birds and the rustling of foliage as golden monkeys and other wildlife dart through the undergrowth. Once the gorilla family is located, visitors are allowed a maximum of one hour in their presence. This strict time limit minimizes stress on the gorillas and helps preserve their natural behaviors. During this magical hour, trekkers can observe the gorillas feeding, playing, grooming, and interacting within their social hierarchy. The dominant silverback often commands attention with his massive size and protective presence, while juveniles tumble and climb nearby, and mothers gently cradle their infants. The experience is intimate, humbling, and often profoundly moving, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of these gentle giants.

Photography is allowed, but flash photography is strictly prohibited to avoid startling the animals. Guides are vigilant in ensuring both the safety of visitors and the well-being of the gorillas, interpreting their behavior and signaling when it’s time to move on.

The trek back to the park headquarters provides time to reflect on the encounter, share stories, and absorb the breathtaking scenery of the Virunga Mountains, with their volcanic peaks rising dramatically against the skyline. Upon returning, each visitor receives a gorilla trekking certificate, a tangible memento of an extraordinary adventure.
