Start at Red Beach, near Akrotiri, known for its striking red cliffs and dramatic scenery. The unique landscape, shaped by volcanic activity, makes it one of Santorini’s most photogenic spots.

Next, explore the Akrotiri Excavations, a Minoan Bronze Age settlement buried in volcanic ash after the 16th-century BC Theran Eruption. The ash preserved frescoes, artifacts, and architectural remains, offering insight into Minoan life. Some believe Akrotiri inspired Plato’s Atlantis. Elevated walkways guide visitors through the site, revealing details like an original Minoan toilet and stone bathtub. Excavations uncovered well-preserved pots, storage vessels, and even remnants of olive oil and fish. While some artifacts remain on-site, the finest frescoes and objects are displayed in Fira’s Archaeological Museum and Athens’ National Archaeological Museum.

Unlike Pompeii, no human remains were found at Akrotiri, suggesting residents evacuated before the eruption. As a prosperous seafaring community, they likely escaped by boat. Why they never returned remains a mystery.

Continue to Kamari, a coastal village rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake. It was named after a surviving arch (Greek: Kamara), part of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon. The village stretches along Santorini’s longest black pebble beach, offering scenic beauty and modern seaside charm.

For a picturesque walk, take the cobblestone path from Fira to Firostefani, where stunning views of the Caldera unfold. A highlight is the blue-domed Aghioi Theodoroi church, frequently featured in Santorini’s iconic photos. If open, step inside to admire the historic icon on its chancel screen. The site once housed two smaller chapels, and in 1570, an icon of the Virgin Mary brought from Russia led to the construction of the present church.
