Day 1: Addis – Fly to Jinka | Ari Village Cultural Experience
Fly from Addis to Jinka. After checking in to your hotel, visit Ari Village, known for its colorful homes, pottery, and coffee production. Participate in a local cooking Walk through the village farms.
Overnight in Jinka.
Day 2: Jinka → Turmi | Mursi Tribe, Dimeka Market & Hamer Village
Drive through Mago National Park to visit the Mursi tribe, famous for women’s lip plates and men’s ceremonial scars. Learn about their customs, body art, and cattle-centered traditions. Continue to weekly local Market, a bustling social hub for Hamer, Karo, and Benna tribes. Arrive in Turmi, the heartland of the Hamer people. Visit a Hamer village to discover their unique hairstyles, jewelry, and mud-plastered huts. If lucky, attend Ceremony (Ukuli Bula), a once-in-a-lifetime coming-of-age ritual with dancing, horn-blowing, and songs of celebration by Hamer women. Overnight in Turmi.
Day 3: Turmi → Karo & Nyangatom Tribes → Fly to Semera
Depart early to the Karo villages (Dus or Korcho) overlooking the Omo River. Observe intricate body and face painting traditions, often used during ceremonies. then drive to Nyangatom tribe, known for colorful beadwork, body scarification, and elaborate hair ornaments. Learn about their nomadic lifestyle and cattle culture. Return to Jinka for your afternoon flight to Semera, the gateway to the Danakil Depression.
Overnight in Semera.
Day 4: Semera → Erta Ale Volcano
After breakfast, drive in a 4x4 convoy across the Afar desert to Dodom Base Camp. Pass by Afar villages and lava plains on the way. After sunset, begin a trek to the Erta Ale volcano crater, one of the world’s few continuously active lava lakes. Observe the glowing magma and hear the deep rumble of the earth. Optionally, stargaze from the crater rim under a crystal-clear desert sky. Overnight camping near the Erta Ale crater.
Day 5: Erta Ale → Hamed Ela | Salt Flats & Camel Caravans
Descend from Erta Ale at sunrise and have breakfast at base camp. Drive across the Danakil desert toward Hamed Ela, the salt-mining outpost. En route, stop to meet Afar salt miners and watch camel caravans carrying salt slabs from Lake Assale. Walk on the shimmering white salt flats in the late afternoon light. Relax at camp before dinner.
Overnight in Hamed Ela.
Day 6: Dallol Active Hydrothermal Fields → Mekele → Fly to Addis Ababa
Drive to Dallol, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. Explore the active Dallol geothermal area, with colorful sulphur pools, acidic hot springs, and salt chimneys in surreal shades of yellow, green, and orange. Visit old salt mines, interact with Afar miners carving salt blocks, and see camel caravans loading salt for transport. Return to Hamed Ela for lunch. Drive to Mekele through volcanic landscapes. Take an evening flight to Addis Ababa. Optionally, enjoy a farewell dinner with a traditional dance show before your airport transfer.
