Beschreibung
Marvel at 14 hummingbird species in a cloud forest sanctuary, then stand at the sacred lake that inspired the legend of El Dorado — all in one day from Bogotá.
Start your morning surrounded by wings. Just 45 minutes from Bogotá, the Hummingbird Observatory in La Calera is a conservation sanctuary where you can observe up to 14 species of hummingbirds in their natural habitat — including the extraordinary sword-billed hummingbird, one of the most jaw-dropping birds on the planet. You'll spend three hours at close range, watching them hover inches away as they feed from garden blooms and specially designed nectar stations. Colombia is the country with the most hummingbird species in the world, and this is one of the best places to see why.
From there, we head to the colonial village of Guatavita for lunch at Embajada Criolla, a beloved local restaurant known for its traditional Cundinamarcan cuisine — the kind of honest, hearty Colombian cooking that doesn't make it onto any tourist menu.
After lunch, we drive to the sacred Laguna de Guatavita — the lake that gave birth to the legend of El Dorado. A guided walk through the Andean hillside brings you to the crater's edge for a view that has captivated explorers, historians, and dreamers for five centuries. Your guide will share the Muisca story behind the gold, the rituals, and the legend that sent the Spanish empire on its greatest chase.
We return to Bogotá by late afternoon, with time to spare before dinner.
