November in Japan is all about autumn leaves. And this day strings together three completely different fall scenes—the zen of a temple, the vastness of a park, and the red and gold of a castle.

Stop 1: Tanigumisan Kegonji Temple · 2.5 hours (10:30–13:00, incl. lunch time)
About 1.5 hours from Nagoya, you arrive at Tanigumisan Kegonji Temple in Gifu Prefecture. This is the 33rd and final temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage—the last stop for Buddhist pilgrims. Kegonji dates back to the Nara period (8th century) and is over 1,200 years old. In 2024, it was officially designated a Japan Heritage site.

A long approach path leads to the temple—old wooden buildings and shops on both sides, a red torii gate at the entrance. Gravel crunches beneath your feet. The air smells of incense and fallen leaves. Beyond the main gate, the main hall appears—deep brown wood, simple and unadorned, surrounded by blazing autumn leaves. The maple trees on both sides turn deep red in November, their leaves pressing down like they're trying to cover the entire roof. Stand before the main hall—red above, red below. If autumn leaves had a sound, it would be the rustle of wind passing through them.

Near the temple gate, there's a charming street of small shops selling local specialties and simple meals. 2.5 hours—enough time to walk the approach, pray at the main hall, stand under the red leaves, and grab a simple lunch.

Stop 2: Yoro Park · 1.5 hours (14:00–15:30)
Leaving Kegonji, we head southwest—about 30 minutes to Yoro Park. This isn't an ordinary park—it's one of Gifu's most famous autumn foliage spots, sprawling around the Yoro Falls. The valley is completely covered in red and gold in November. Follow the walking path—red, yellow, orange leaves layer the hillside like a giant autumn quilt. Yoro Falls drops from above, mist catching the light.

1.5 hours—enough to walk along the valley path, pause at the falls, and sit on a bench under the autumn leaves.

Stop 3: Kiyosu Castle · 60 min (16:30–17:30)
In the afternoon, we arrive at the final stop of the day—Kiyosu Castle. A vermilion castle whose bridge is so vividly red that many say it inspired the bathhouse in Spirited Away. The red bridge, the water below, the castle's silhouette—it does bear a striking resemblance to Yubaba's bathhouse. You stand on the bridge and look back—the entire castle glows warm red in the setting sun. The castle itself dates back to the Sengoku period, serving as a key base for Oda Nobunaga's unification of Japan. From the top of the castle keep, you can see the entire castle town and the distant mountains beyond.
