Explore the Osu Shopping District with an English-speaking assistant. Discover the best local shops and eateries, and learn about the food Nagoya people generally have. Visit the famous Osu Kannon Temple and enjoy a free matcha-flavored soft serve.
Begin your tour by meeting your assistant and heading to the Osu Shopping District. Discover a huge shopping area with approximately 1,200 shops of various kinds, including food, cafes, and clothing shops.
Visit Kushi-Hatcho Dote-Hatcho, a shop of miso skewers and tebasaki (chicken wings). Miso is one of the features of Nagoya food, as you can see it on many things in Nagoya. So is tebasaki as well. Whenever you come to Nagoya, tebasaki is a must-try.
Next, head to Ajia-bo (Asiabow), a shop selling Osu karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and tapioca drinks. It is standard for Osu visitors to get some karaages and tapioca drinks, which you do not probably know. 6 flavors of karaage and 32 kinds of tapioca drinks are available here.
Then, visit Aoyagi, a uiro shop. Uiro is a Nagoya sweet made from rice powder and sugar. Enjoy various flavors of uiro here, including white and black as regular ones, yuzu (a Japanese citrus fruit), sakura (cherry blossom), or matcha. Besides uiro, some other Nagoya sweets are available here, such as kaeru-manju (frog-figured bun).
Next, head to Kakien Amakobo, a Japanese sweets cafe. Enjoy a free matcha-flavored soft serve. The soft serve tastes really matcha and is very creamy. Other than the soft serve, you can get tea things so check them out there.
Finally, visit Osu Kannon Temple, one of the three greatest Kannon temples in Japan, including Sensoji Temple at Asakusa. In Japan's New Year Holidays, a lot of people come to the temple to do Hatsumode, the first visit to a temple in the year.
