-- Sanzen-in Temple (60 min) --
Nestled in the misty Ohara valley north of Kyoto, this 1,200-year-old Tendai Buddhist temple is a world away from the city's crowds. Stroll through the famous moss gardens where vibrant green carpet covers the ground, dotted with small stone Jizo statues and Heian-era Amida Buddha figures. The temple's two exquisite landscape gardens — Shoho-en and Yusei-en — offer seasonal beauty year-round: cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, fiery maples in autumn. Lunch is at your own expense, with local teahouses nearby.

-- Kifune Shrine (60 min) --
Journey to one of Kyoto's most atmospheric spiritual sites. The head shrine of over 450 Kifune shrines nationwide, Kifune is dedicated to the water deity. Walk up the iconic stone staircase lined with hundreds of vermillion lanterns, and try the famous water omikuji — blank fortune papers that reveal their message only when dipped in the shrine's sacred spring water. The riverside setting, surrounded by mountain forest, is especially magical. You may also spot the seasonal kawadoko (riverside dining terraces) in warmer months.

-- Arashiyama (approx. 170 min, free time) --
Kyoto's most iconic scenic district, Arashiyama is especially breathtaking during cherry blossom season in spring and autumn maple season, when the mountainside erupts in layers of pink and fiery red. Spend nearly 3 hours freely exploring this photogenic area. Two route options:

Route 1 — Cultural Walk: Cross the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge, wander the ethereal Bamboo Grove, visit Nomimiya Shrine (a hidden gem for love prayers), explore Tenryu-ji Temple (optional, ¥500 — a UNESCO World Heritage Zen temple), and browse the lively shopping street for local snacks.

Route 2 — Sagano Scenic Train (optional, included in ticket plan): Board the vintage open-air train for a round-trip journey of approx. 60 minutes through the Hozu River Gorge. Breathtaking cliff-side valley views unfold from every carriage. Return with ample time to explore the shopping street.

Note: Sagano train departs Saga at 15:02, returns at 15:56. Plan your Arashiyama sightseeing accordingly.
