The first stop is Noboribetsu Hell Valley, the steam heart of one of Japan's most famous hot spring areas. Next comes Snow World Toya, a winter theme park near Lake Toya where everything is built from ice and snow. Walk through galleries of hand-carved ice sculptures, slide down snow tracks, and sip a drink at the ice bar — all in a sub-zero wonderland. For an extra thrill, ride a snowmobile across the frozen terrain: solo riders pay ¥15,000, or two people can share one machine for ¥20,000 (cash only; drivers must be at least 16 years old). Spend about 70 minutes here enjoying the cold-side fun.

Then it's on to the highlight of the day: the Shikotsu Ice Festival, held on the shores of Lake Shikotsu from late January to late February. Giant ice structures are built each year by spraying the lake's crystal-clear water onto frames and letting it freeze in the harsh Hokkaido cold. The result is a translucent, glowing blue — the famous "Shikotsu Blue." Your arrival at 15:30 gives you time to wander through the ice tunnels, admire the ice walls, and visit the ice shrine to make a wish. At 16:30, the coloured lights switch on and the entire site transforms into a luminous blue fantasy world. Warm up with a bowl of hot ramen from a lakeside food stall before boarding the bus home.
