Day 1: Mekong Food Tour & Night Market (D)
Begin your adventure in Luang Prabang with a food tour. As the sun sets, the city’s vibrant food scene comes to life. Street stalls fire up their grills, pestles pound out papaya salad, and the city’s boldest flavors come to life. On this evening moveable feast, a local food-obsessed guide will take you far beyond the tourist menus. Graze your way through riverside eateries, local favorites, and back-alley markets. Crunch into riverweed crackers and Hmong mushroom dip, before a saffron orange-robed monk invites you for an open floor chat to discover their unique lifestyle in Luang Prabang. After a short blessing, hop foot to the Mekong, as the sun sets over the riverside eateries, with plates of pun pa grilled fish served with a bundle of fresh herbs and vegetables. Expect over 15 tastings all over the city, from sticky rice roasted over hot coals, to herb-packed Lao sausage, piquant papaya salads, beef platters and a cold beer Lao, and a steamy bowl of khao piak sen noodles, amongst many more surprises.
Day 2: Pak Ou Caves & Kuang Si Waterfalls (B, L)
Start your day with a pickup from your hotel in Luang Prabang city center and board a traditional long-tail boat for a scenic cruise along the Mekong River. Enjoy views of rural Laos, local villages, fishermen, and daily riverside life before arriving at the sacred Pak Ou Caves, home to thousands of Buddha statues. Explore the caves while your guide shares their fascinating history and legends. Continue downstream to Ban Xang Hai, where you'll learn how the famous Lao Lao rice whisky is produced and sample the local specialty before cruising back to Luang Prabang. Enjoy a buffet lunch at a riverside restaurant overlooking the Mekong River. After lunch, travel by minivan to Kuang Si Waterfalls. Spend around 2 hours exploring the stunning three-tiered waterfalls, walking the nature trails, swimming in the turquoise pools, visiting the bear sanctuary, or hiking to the top for spectacular panoramic views.
Day 3: Alms Giving & Morning Market Tour and City Tour (B, L)
Rise early to the sound of temple gongs and join your guide to witness the sacred Alms Giving Ceremony, where hundreds of monks silently collect offerings of sticky rice and food as part of a centuries-old Buddhist tradition. If you wish, your guide will show you the proper and respectful way to participate. Afterwards, visit Luang Prabang Morning Market, where locals shop for fresh produce, meat, and regional specialties. Your guide will introduce you to a selection of local snacks, served with Lao coffee or a local drink and enjoy breakfast at a Mekong River restaurant. Begin your full-day city tour with a visit to Wat Mai. Continue to the Royal Palace Museum, featuring a unique blend of traditional Lao and French Beaux-Arts architecture. Stroll the magnificent Wat Xieng Thong, one of the city's most beautiful and significant temples.
