Beschreibung

The site of the Peuplement Cave & the Marine Cemetery reveals a founding story. Between historical facts, legends and anecdotes, this guided walk reveals the human origins of Reunion Island.
✨ Following in the footsteps of the first inhabitants of Reunion Island
As the historic cradle of the island's settlement, Saint-Paul holds a foundational place in Reunion's history. This guided walk takes you on a discovery of the island's human origins, between historical facts, local legends, and coastal landscapes steeped in memory.

Welcome and background
We'll meet at the site of the Settlement Cave. After a presentation of the program and an introduction to the discovery of the island and the first human settlements, the scene is set: passing navigators, first settlers, slaves, and marginal figures who became inhabitants.

The Settlement Cave: between myth and history
In front of this iconic site, we'll talk about the stories of the island's very first inhabitants. Between archives and oral tradition, we'll compare notes to better understand this founding period.

⚰️ The marine cemetery and the slave cemetery
The marine cemetery reveals another side of Reunion's history, a society that was truly "upside down," between the prominent and the more discreet figures.
Facing the ocean, the slave cemetery reminds us of the reality of the colonial system. These memorial sites let us talk about living conditions, social hierarchies, and legacies that are still visible today.

Keys to understanding and discussion
Throughout the tour, I'll share historical landmarks, anecdotes, and contextual elements to better understand the construction of Reunion society. The tour obviously leaves room for discussion and questions.

End of visit
The walk ends facing the coastal landscape of Saint-Paul, where the island's history began to be written. You'll leave with a clearer vision of the origins and memories that have shaped Reunion Island.

⏳ Before or after the tour?
- Classified as a "City and Country of Art and History", Saint-Paul retains many witnesses of its colonial past: Hôtel Laçay, Maison Serveaux, Villa Rivière, and the Villèle Museum on the heights.
- On Friday and Saturday mornings, the fairground market brings the waterfront to life.
- Enjoy the beaches to observe the fauna of the island's lagoon with fins, mask, and snorkel, or explore the seabed from the port of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains.
- Explore the landscapes of Cap La Houssaye, a must-see spot. On the sea side, it offers you an unforgettable face-to-face with the Indian Ocean at sunset. On the mountain side, it reveals a savannah that you can walk through.
- To cool off, head to the Étang Saint-Paul Nature Reserve or the Tour des Roche, true oases near the city center.
