Beschreibung
Meet local artisans and learn about their work on a guided tour of Kampala's craft market. Try your hand at making a craft, such as a bead bracelet or basket, and explore the market.
Begin your experience by meeting your guide at Senana Supermarket on Buganda Road. Get a short introduction to Kampala and Uganda’s craft culture, and learn why handmade crafts are important to local communities.
Meet local women artisans and watch them demonstrate selected crafts. Learn about different types of beads, how colors are selected, how beads are threaded, how necklaces and bracelets are assembled, and how long different pieces can take to make.
Next, try making something yourself. Choose from making a simple bead bracelet, trying basic basket weaving, decorating a small piece of African fabric, or trying a simple craft-design activity. The artisan guides you while explaining the process.
Ask questions about the craft, such as how the artisan learned it, how long they have been making crafts, where the materials come from, how long one item takes, what selling crafts means to their family, and which products are most popular with visitors.
Then, begin a guided walk through the surrounding Buganda Road craft market. Learn how the craft market works, where different types of crafts come from, the differences between handmade and mass-produced items, common materials used in Ugandan crafts, how to identify different styles, and how respectful bargaining works.
Finally, return to the starting area around Senana. Before saying goodbye, take a final photo with your crafts or the artisans, where appropriate and with consent.
