Description
Hanover and the English royal family - all about the connection
In 1714, Elector George Ludwig, who ascended the British throne as George I, marked the beginning of the period of personal union in which Hanover's rulers also ruled England. Although the two countries continued to exist separately, there was an exchange in science, agriculture and art. As the last king of the personal union, William IV, had no male descendants and the Guelph law of succession ruled out a female succession, the period of personal union came to an end in 1837. Find out more about this exciting time with the guided tour "Hanover: Very British - on the trail of the personal union".
At the beginning, you will be served "Guelph tea" in the tea room. A dedication to the Guelphs, the House of Hanover and the close relationship between the Royal House of Hanover and Great Britain. Earl Grey, a great classic among teas, was chosen as the official drink of the English court for over 200 years.
The tour is rounded off with a "Guiness" or non-alcoholic drink in the Dublin Inn, an Irish pub in the old town.
