● A little history for you - Jaipur, Rajasthan's capital, is an enthralling historical city and the gateway to India's most flamboyant state, known as the Pink City and founded in 1727 by Jai Singh II. the notable astronomer 260 years ago.
This Raja King of Amber planned to shift his capital from Amber, some 11 km from Jaipur, to accommodate the growing population and increasing water shortage. He consulted with many architects and researched books while planning the layout of Jaipur, and work commenced in 1727, taking 4 years to complete all major roads, offices and palaces.
The newly built city was divided into nine blocks - two for state buildings and palaces, and the remaining seven allocated for his public, built within large defensive walls and imposing gates.
Today, this colorful city is a hub of activity, from the bustling roads with their buses, motorbikes, auto rickshaws and even camels. Yet in the midst of all this chaos, the splendours of Jaipur's majestic past evoke the relative calm of a different pace and another world.
At the heart is the City Palace, a complex which houses a museum but the greatest part of it is still a Royal residence. Hawa Mahal, essentially a high screen wall built so the women of the Royal household could observe the street festivities without being seen. Amber Fort, high in the arid hills surrounding the city is this grand star attraction.
