Description

Jodhpur “The Sun City” is a city in the Thar Desert of the northwest Indian state of Rajasthan. Its 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort is a former palace that’s now a museum, displaying weapons, painting.
Mehrangarh Fort
Mehrangarh Fort holds pride of place in Jodhpur because of its splendid architecture and the diverse history associated with it. Considered one of the most formidable and magnificent forts in Rajasthan, Mehrangarh Fort was built by Rao Jodha in the year 1459. The fort is spread over an area of 5 km and is built on a 125-meter-high hill on the outskirts of Jodhpur city. Seven gates can be used to enter the Mehrangarh fort. These seven gates were made by different rulers and were built in honour of the victory over the Bikaner and Jaipur armies.

Jaswant Thada
This white-marbled architecture is a memorial site of the Rajput clan, which has temple-like architecture on their tour to Jodhpur. Jaswant Thada is a perfect example of architectural brilliance. The architecture is made of white marble, which is so fine that the outer surface of the whole building emits a warm glow during sunlight. Currently, it exhibits a variety of paintings and portraits of Jodhpur rulers.

Umaid Bhawan Palace
The palace was built to employ the farmers of Jodhpur. It was made between 1928 and 1943 under the reign of Maharaja Umaid Singh. The Umaid Bhawan Palace was designed by the renowned architect Henry Blanchester and shows a blend of Eastern and western architectural influences. Its majestic 105-foot high cupola is influenced by the Renaissance, while the towers draw inspiration from Rajput tradition.

Toorji ka jhalra
This stepwell, or the 'jhalra', was built in the 1740s by a queen of Maharaja Abhay Singh to keep up with an age-old tradition in Jodhpur of constructing step wells or step-ponds by the queens or royal ladies.

The stunning architectural design is a great example of the range of styles that were popular in the region during the era. Its seven stories feature various designs, from the upper well's carved stone and marble arches to the intricate stone carvings on the walls.

Ghanta Ghar
The Ghanta Ghar in Jodhpur is a magnificent clock tower in the centre of the city, built by Maharaja Sardar Singh about 200 years ago. Known as the clock tower of Rajasthan, it is a popular landmark that signifies the start of Old Jodhpur. The tower offers a brilliant panoramic view of the city from the top. The area surrounding this imposing structure is bustling with locals presenting all sorts of products and services, making it the busiest and largest marketplace in Jodhpur. The markets and the tower are a must-visit for travellers who want to witness and experience the culture and people of Jodhpur.
