The archaeological site at Ritigala reveals the remnants of an ancient monastery complex, believed to date back to the 1st century B.C. This secluded retreat served as a sanctuary for monks seeking solitude and enlightenment. Visitors can explore the ancient meditation platforms, stone pathways, and ruins of ponds and halls, all blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings.
Marvel at the breathtaking rock carvings and vibrant frescoes depicting queens, princesses, and attendants within the fortress walls. Afterward, take a break for lunch at your own expense before visiting local artisans to observe traditional crafts such as wood carving and batik textiles. You’ll also have the opportunity to purchase unique souvenirs.
On the return journey to Colombo, stop by the renowned Dambulla Cave Temple, the largest and best-preserved temple complex in Sri Lanka.
