Discover the world of Chinese tea with a visit to a local tea market in Hangzhou. Learn how to identify quality tea, master the art of brewing, and enjoy a guided tea tasting.
Begin your experience by meeting your guide at the Wulin Square Metro Station. Head to a local tea market and explore the stalls with your guide. See where locals buy Longjing tea, other green teas, flower teas, dark teas, oolongs, and teaware.
Learn how to identify quality tea by look, smell, and touch, the difference between pre-Qingming and other harvests, and how to avoid overpriced tourist traps.
Next, sit down in a nearby tea studio. Your instructor will guide you through a brief history of Hangzhou tea culture and the legend of Longjing, the proper way to smell, steep, and sip different teas, and three tea tastings: Longjing (green), Jasmine (flower), and a wildcard (oolong or dark tea).
Then, take part in a hands-on tea brewing workshop. Under expert guidance, learn how to warm the teaware, the perfect water temperature for different teas, and steeping times. Brew Longjing tea side-by-side: one correct, one with common mistakes. Taste the difference and try a simple tea ceremony etiquette: serving and receiving tea.
Finally, wrap up with a Q&A session, review brewing tips, and take home a small sample of tea.
