Salzburg: Sound of Music Private Tour & Austrian Lakes

Let the hills come alive on a private journey through the places that made "The Sound of Music" famous, then keep going into Austria's Lake District, where the Alpine scenery is even more spectacular than on screen.

Your day begins with pickup at your hotel in Salzburg. Settle into your private, air-conditioned car or minivan and head to Mirabell Gardens while the paths are still quiet. Walk to the Pegasus fountain, climb the steps and pass through the hedge tunnel where the von Trapp children sang "Do-Re-Mi", with the fortress rising above the old town.

Next, visit Nonnberg Abbey, the Benedictine convent founded around 714 where the real Maria was a novice. Take a short uphill walk with views over the rooftops of the old town and visit the abbey church. Continue to Schloss Leopoldskron, whose lakeside terrace appears as the back of the von Trapp villa and where the boat scene was filmed. The palace is now a private hotel, so you enjoy it from the shore.

Then drive to Hellbrunn Palace Park to see the glass gazebo from "Sixteen Going on Seventeen", set among the lawns and ponds of the 17th-century summer palace.

After the film locations, the scenery changes completely. Leave the city behind and head into the Salzkammergut with a photo stop at Lake Fuschl, its clear green water framed by forested hills. Continue to Mondsee, stroll through the colourful old town and visit the Basilica of St. Michael, where the wedding of Maria and Captain von Trapp was filmed. Take your time over lunch or coffee by the lake.

Next is St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang, a charming village with a lakeside promenade and the birthplace of Mozart's mother; stop for coffee and cake. Your last stop is St. Wolfgang on the opposite shore of Wolfgangsee, a postcard village with its famous pilgrimage church and lakeside lanes. Finally, relax on the scenic drive back to your hotel in Salzburg.
