Hangzhou: Silk Museum, Tea Museum & Leifeng Pagoda Tour

Begin your journey with a convenient pickup from your hotel or train station. Head to the China National Silk Museum, the world’s largest museum dedicated to silk. Trace the epic history of silk, from its origins in Neolithic China to its spread across Eurasia. Experience the living heritage of silk making, honored as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Gain deep insight into the evolution of silk production, imperial textiles, and the influential Silk Road.

Next, proceed to Huqingyutang, the most famous traditional Chinese pharmacy in southern China. Having stood for over a century, the commercial architecture is one of the highlights. The pharmacy consists of the business hall, museum galleries, handcraft workshops, and a TCM clinic. Step into the business hall and find a working pharmacy. While in the museum, dive into traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) history, learning about the philosophies behind the practice. You may also experience a TCM check-up at the clinic if you are interested and if the doctors are available (at your own expense).

Continue to Leifeng Pagoda, standing on the hill along the southern bank of West Lake. Originally built in 975 AD to commemorate the birth of King Qian Chu’s son, the pagoda became a household name across China thanks to the beloved folk tale “The Legend of the White Snake.” Over the centuries, the pagoda endured repeated misfortunes and finally collapsed. The current pagoda, open to the public in 2002, was rebuilt atop the original ruins, excavated and encased in glass. During the excavation in 2001, more than 70 pieces of relics and artifacts were unearthed, including the precious Buddha’s hair relics. Some of these are displayed here.

Next, visit the China National Tea Museum. China is the birthplace of tea and the country with the longest history of tea culture. China National Tea Museum is the only national-level museum in China dedicated to tea and its traditions. Its displays trace thousands of years of tea history, diverse tea varieties, ancient tea-making crafts, fine tea sets, and folk tea customs.

Nestled in the mist-wrapped hills around West Lake, Hangzhou’s tea plantations are the birthplace of China’s most famous green tea, Longjing Tea (Dragon Well Tea). Take a slow walk along the tea trails up to the hills, enjoy the breathtaking view of tea terraces carpeting the mountain slopes, and see peaceful tea villages and traditional farmers’ houses dotting the lush greenery. Explore the labor-intensive process of this unique tea cultivation: hand-picking and hand-roasting. Stop over at a local farmer’s house to taste a cup of high-quality Longjing tea, and get to know stories and traditions about this tea, as well as farmers’ life here.
