Descripción
Create silver jewelry in Kotagede with the Salim family’s fourth generation. Learn authentic Javanese silversmithing in a working studio and take home your handmade piece.
Create your own silver jewelry in Salim Silver’s working family studio in Kotagede, Yogyakarta’s historic silver district. Learn directly from the fourth generation of the Salim family and discover a silversmithing tradition passed down since 1930.
Choose a ring, pendant, bracelet, or another design suited to the session, or bring your own idea. No previous experience is needed. With up to 5 grams of silver included, you’ll learn authentic Javanese silversmithing techniques in the same working studio where the family crafts silver jewelry.
With your instructor’s guidance, measure and sketch your design, then shape and decorate the silver using traditional Kotagede repoussé, known locally as tatah. Take an active role throughout the process and do as much of the work yourself as you feel comfortable. During soldering and final polishing, you can continue under close supervision or ask your instructor to assist.
Finish your piece with a bright polish or, where suitable, an optional antique-style oxidized finish. Leave with one wearable piece made by your own hands and a deeper understanding of Kotagede’s silver-making heritage. Tools, instruction, and up to 5 grams of silver are included. Additional silver can be purchased at the workshop if your design requires it.
