Longji Ping'an Rice Terraces – often hailed as the "Crown of World Terraces" and "An Unrivaled Wonder under Heaven" – are carved into the slopes of Longji Mountain, ranging from 300 to 1,100 meters above sea level. These are no ordinary fields on flat plains; they are a monumental epic sculpted by the Zhuang people over centuries, from the Yuan, Ming, to Qing dynasties, chiseled into sheer mountainsides with sweat and wisdom.
The terraces wind upward like ribbons, coiling from the foothills to the clouds, creating a breathtaking spectacle where "small hills resemble spiraling conches, and grand peaks tower like pagodas." The landscape unfolds in two signature views: "Nine Dragons and Five Tigers" – where nine ridges stretch like dragons and five knolls crouch like tigers, all draped in layered rice paddies – and "Seven Stars with the Moon" – where seven tiny hillocks dot the fields like celestial guards surrounding a crescent-shaped terrace. It's a scene within a scene, rich with poetic charm.
The terraces are a living canvas that shifts with the seasons:

Spring – water fills the paddies, glistening like strings of silver chains draped over the hills;


Summer – young rice sprouts turn the slopes into waves of emerald green;


Autumn – golden grains ripen, transforming the mountains into towering pyramids of gold;


Winter – if snow falls, the terraces resemble white jade rings or dragons playing in the mist.

Across this vast ocean of terraces, there are 15,862 individual plots – the largest barely 0.62 acres, and the smallest large enough for only three rice seedlings. Hence the local sayings: "A frog can leap across three fields" and "A single straw raincoat can cover an entire plot."
Beyond its visual grandeur, Ping'an Rice Terraces are a living testament to an ancient farming civilization. Designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System, its ingenious irrigation network – channeling water from the mountaintop to nourish every single terrace below – reflects a timeless wisdom of harmony between man and nature. The Zhuang ethnic minority has thrived here for generations, their stilted wooden houses dotting the hillsides, blending seamlessly into the landscape with rustic elegance.
