Turn your name into Japanese kanji and learn the meaning and how to write it. Combine your own calligraphy with your favorite ukiyo-e artwork to create a unique T-shirt to take home the same day.
Discover Japanese calligraphy in historic Uraga, a peaceful seaside town near Kamakura.
Your experience begins at Kanako Designs, where you will discover how your name can be expressed using Japanese kanji. Before your visit, we prepare three kanji options for your name. Our staff will explain the meaning of each character and help you choose the one you like best.
Next, learn the basic way to hold a calligraphy brush and practice writing your chosen kanji on traditional calligraphy paper. No previous experience is needed. Our staff will guide you through the process as you practice and create your final piece.
Once your calligraphy is complete, choose your favorite ukiyo-e artwork and combine it with the kanji you wrote yourself. Your original design will then be printed onto a T-shirt during your visit. You can take home your finished T-shirt the same day — a one-of-a-kind souvenir created by you in Japan.

Visit the historic Tomyodo Lighthouse, overlooking the sea of Uraga depicted by the renowned ukiyo-e artists Hokusai and Hiroshige. We will guide you to this scenic historic site and introduce you to another side of Uraga beyond the calligraphy experience.
You will also receive a complimentary round-trip ticket for the Uraga Ferry “Atagomaru,” a small local ferry that crosses Uraga Harbor. Enjoy the short boat ride and experience the atmosphere of this historic port town from the water.

Please note that Japanese calligraphy ink is used during this experience. Although we take care to avoid spills, ink may stain clothing. We recommend wearing clothes that you do not mind getting slightly stained.
After booking, please provide the name of each participant who will make a T-shirt. We will prepare three kanji options for each name before your visit.
