Descripción
Attempt the summit of Cotopaxi on a private 2-day climb from Quito with certified guides, private transport, refuge accommodation, meals, permits, and mountain equipment included.
Climb Cotopaxi, one of Ecuador’s most iconic volcanoes and one of the most famous summits in the Andes, on a private 2-day high-altitude expedition from Quito. Standing at 5,897 meters / 19,347 feet, Cotopaxi is the second-highest mountain in Ecuador and one of the most rewarding mountaineering experiences in the country.
This private expedition is designed for adventurous travelers with good physical condition and proper altitude acclimatization. Previous technical climbing experience is not required, but this is a demanding high-altitude climb and not a regular hiking tour.
Day 1 begins with pickup from your hotel or preferred location in Quito in private transportation. Travel toward Cotopaxi National Park, located about 45 km / 28 mi from the city. After entering the park, enjoy the surrounding volcanic landscapes, complete the registration process, and continue to the parking area below the José Ribas Refuge. From there, hike approximately 40 minutes to the refuge at 4,864 meters / 15,958 feet.
Once at the refuge, settle in, enjoy the mountain atmosphere, and receive a safety briefing from your certified mountain guide. In the afternoon, have dinner, prepare your equipment, and rest early. Around midnight, wake up, get dressed, drink something warm, eat a light snack, and get ready for the summit attempt.
Day 2 begins around 12:30 AM with the ascent toward the summit of Cotopaxi. The climb usually takes approximately 6 hours and is done at night for safety and better mountain conditions. You will climb with technical mountaineering equipment and the support of certified guides, following a rope system according to the conditions of the route.
If weather, glacier conditions, acclimatization, physical condition, and guide safety decisions allow it, reach the summit around sunrise. From the top, admire Cotopaxi’s impressive 800-meter-wide crater and unforgettable views of the Andes, including Antisana, Cayambe, Chimborazo, Ilinizas, and many other surrounding volcanoes. On clear nights, you may even see the lights of Quito in the distance during the ascent.
After approximately 30 minutes at the summit, depending on weather and safety conditions, begin the descent back to the refuge. The descent usually takes around 3 hours. Once back at the refuge, enjoy breakfast, organize your equipment, and descend to the parking area, where your private transport will be waiting to take you back to Quito. Drop-off will be at your hotel or preferred location.
This is a real high-altitude mountaineering expedition. Summit success is never guaranteed and depends on weather, route conditions, acclimatization, physical condition, and your guide’s safety assessment. Safety is always the priority.
