What replaced it was Spanish: stucco walls, iron balconies, and courtyards hidden behind carriage gates. On this two-hour walking tour, a local guide unpacks 300 years of building history in a group of no more than 14.

Your route winds past St. Louis Cathedral and the Presbytere on Jackson Square, then through the quiet blocks where the oldest residential buildings in the Quarter still stand. You'll stop at the Pontalba Apartments, the oldest continuously rented apartments in North America. You'll see the Ursuline Convent, the only surviving building from the French colonial period. And you'll pause at Napoleon House, where a plot to rescue the exiled emperor gave a corner bar its name.

Along the way, your guide teaches you to read the buildings themselves. You'll learn to spot the four distinct types of Creole townhouses that line Royal and Chartres streets.
