Addis Ababa: Debre Libanos Wildlife Tour

Depart from Addis Ababa and head to Debre Libanos, located about 110 km north of the city. Enjoy a scenic drive through dramatic highland landscapes, deep gorges, and lush greenery.

Arrive at Debre Libanos and embark on a wildlife adventure. Encounter large troops of Gelada baboons, often called the “bleeding-heart monkey,” grazing peacefully along the cliffs and grasslands. Capture excellent photos, especially in the early morning, as these habituated baboons are not aggressive if approached respectfully.

Continue to the gorge and surrounding escarpments, which are excellent birding areas. Spot Rüppell’s Griffon Vulture, Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture), Verreaux’s Eagle, White-billed Starling (endemic), and various sunbirds and cliff-nesting species. Enjoy spectacular views of soaring raptors from the cliffs near the gorge.

Visit the historic Portuguese Bridge, believed to date back to the 16th or 17th century. Surrounded by breathtaking views of the Jemma River Gorge, this popular hiking and photo spot is also frequented by Geladas.
