Begin your day in Mekelle or the Gheralta area and travel toward the dramatic sandstone mountains. Instead of starting with a standard hotel breakfast, begin the adventure with a fresh fruit trail basket. Enjoy a selection of fresh seasonal fruits before the hike, such as watermelon, banana, orange, apple, and mango (when seasonally available).

Begin the guided hike toward the selected rock-hewn church. Depending on the chosen route and current local access, the experience can include a visit to Abune Yemata Guh or another suitable church in the Gheralta area. The region is famous for churches carved into sandstone mountains, many reached by hiking and, in some cases, demanding climbs.

For a more adventurous route such as Abune Yemata Guh, continue with the local guide and follow the current approved climbing procedures. The ascent can be physically demanding and exposed, making it suitable only for confident travelers comfortable with heights. Local climbing assistance and safety arrangements should follow the actual conditions and procedures available on the day.

Reach the church and enter respectfully. Discover the remarkable connection between faith, the mountain, ancient religious art, and the surrounding landscape. Gheralta's rock-hewn churches remain important sacred places, while sites such as Abune Yemata Guh are known for their dramatic cliff setting and historic paintings.
