We visit the famous Meteora monasteries from Athens on a PRIVATE trip. A long day but worth the visit to the monasteries of Meteora that defy logic and inspire awe. Meteora: Suspended in the air!
Why this tour?
It is private and authentic. You will save time (no train, no taxis to/from the train station) and experience the most amazing location in Northern Greece in a non-touristy way. It’s a great personalised experience just for you! The destination is “touristy” but you will still experience “real Greece” if you follow in the footsteps of your tour leader.
A long day and trip but worth the trouble and cost. A more expensive (private) way to visit Meteora but the alternatives of a tour bus or the train will probably disappoint you and leave you exhausted!
Begin the drive towards the north, where you will arrive at Kalabaka town and Meteora in around 3.5 hours without any unnecessary stops.
The best part of this private tour is the multiple stops we make for you to see and take pictures of the Monasteries from different angles and distances. This makes all the difference and you be left with some great images but also photographs!
Visit two (maybe three) of the incredible monasteries depending on your energy, and your pace. After you explore 2-3 of them, you will discover that the magic of Meteora is the views "of" Meteora rather than the monasteries themselves from "within".
Originally occupied by 11th-century hermits, the monasteries later became hiding places for monks when the Roman Empire started to fall. The two monasteries you may visit are subject to change depending on the day of the visit since most have different opening days. Typically, the monasteries to be visited include the Grand Meteora Monastery and Moni Agiou Stefanou or Moni Varlaam.
On the way back to Athens we have included two main stops/steps to make traveling more enjoyable.
- The first step is to enjoy the great included lunch with drinks under the guidance of your tour leader. Authentic Greek food avoiding the typical tourist traps of Kalabaka town next to Meteora.
- On the way back, we'll also stop to stretch at the Thermopylae battlefield of the famous “300” of King Leonidas of Sparta. The location of the historical battle between the Spartans (300) and the Persians.
