Explore the Gili Islands on a snorkeling tour from Gili Trawangan. Swim with sea turtles, discover underwater statues, and enjoy a lunch break on the shores of Gili Air.
Begin your adventure by meeting your guide at the main beach area near the Gili Trawangan jetty. Fill out a quick registration form and get fitted for your snorkeling gear, including a mask, snorkel, and fins. Once everyone is geared up, board a traditional Indonesian wooden longboat, often equipped with a glass-bottom viewing section.
Find a spot on the wooden benches, and feel the engine roar to life as the boat glides away from the bustling shores of Gili Trawangan into the open, deep blue sea. Head straight toward Gili Meno, the quietest and most tranquil of the three islands.
Arrive at the first snorkeling spot, the world-famous underwater sculpture titled "Nest" by artist Jason deCaires Taylor. Plunge into the refreshing, translucent water and be greeted by a circle of 48 life-sized human figures intertwined in pairs. Over time, these sculptures have become a thriving artificial reef, slowly being covered in soft corals and attracting schools of colorful damselfish and sergeants. Swirl around the statues alongside dozens of fellow snorkelers in a surreal, ethereal experience that feels like exploring a sunken, ancient city.
Next, take a short boat ride to Turtle Point, one of the absolute highlights of the trip. The Gili Islands are world-renowned for their sea turtle populations, and this spot does not disappoint. Float gently on the surface, and spot a majestic Green Sea Turtle or a Hawksbill Turtle resting on the sandy ocean floor or gliding effortlessly through the water.
After an active morning of swimming, the boat docks on the shores of Gili Air for a well-deserved lunch break. Gili Air perfectly blends the lively vibe of Trawangan with the rustic charm of Meno. Passengers have about an hour and a half to relax. Choose from one of the many beachfront warungs (local restaurants) to enjoy traditional Indonesian dishes like Nasi Goreng (fried rice) or Mie Goreng (fried noodles) while sipping on a fresh coconut.
There is also plenty of time to stroll down the sandy paths, take photos with the iconic ocean swings, or simply sunbathe on the powdery white sand. The final snorkeling stop takes place just off the coast of Gili Air at a spot often called the Garden Fish Reef. The water here is shallow, calm, and incredibly clear.
Jump in and be surrounded by thousands of friendly, inquisitive reef fish. The guides often bring along a bit of fish food, triggering a feeding frenzy of yellow-striped butterflyfish, neon blue damselfish, and clownfish darting in and out of the sea anemones. The coral gardens here are vast and varied, providing a final, colorful sensory overload to wrap up the aquatic journey.
the captain calls everyone back on board. As the boat cruises back to Gili Trawangan, the mood on the boat is incredibly relaxed. Sun-kissed, exhausted in the best way possible, and filled with memories of turtles and underwater statues, passengers swap travel stories and look through their underwater photos.
