There are two ways to see Komodo in a day. On a speedboat you cover more
water and spend the day holding on. On an LUXURY boat you cover less, and
spend the day actually looking at it. This trip is the second kind.

We pick you up from your hotel and confirm your exact time the evening
before, by message. If we say 05:15, we are there at 05:15. If the boat is
not leaving until 06:00, we tell you that too instead of leaving you waiting
at the harbour.

Breakfast is served as we sail out. Padar Island comes first, before the
crowds. The climb takes about 40 minutes on a stepped path and your guide
sets the pace. From the ridge, three bays open below you in three shades of
blue.

At Pink Beach you get in the water, and so does your guide. Mask, snorkel,
fins and a life jacket are handed to you on deck. The reef starts a few
metres from shore. If you have never snorkeled, or cannot swim, tell us when
you book and a guide stays beside you the whole time — we do not turn
non-swimmers away.

On Komodo Island a licensed park ranger leads. Dragons are usually found near
the ranger station and the watering holes. We hold a minimum of one hour here
and the boat does not leave early because someone else is running late.

Meals are the part guests notice most on a slow boat, so we do them properly.
You choose your own dishes from a menu before departure — no fixed set menu,
no surprise chilli. Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon coffee break are served
at a laid table on deck, and you eat sitting down.

Our photographer is on board all day with a camera and sends you the full
gallery the same evening, free. If you want GoPro footage from underwater or
drone footage of the boat and the islands, both can be added when you book.

The last stretch is the reason to take a slow boat. As the light drops we
anchor off Pulau Kalong. Coffee and snacks come out on deck. At dusk,
thousands of flying foxes lift out of the mangroves and keep streaming
overhead for around twenty minutes, close enough to hear the wings. You are
back in Labuan Bajo by around 19:15.
