Descripción

Explore the Basilica of Neptune underground and Pantheon on a guided tour in Rome. Learn about the history of the Campus Martius area, then enjoy a self-guided visit to the Pantheon.
Meet your guide and begin your tour with an introduction to the history of the Campus Martius area, where the Pantheon and Basilica of Neptune were constructed during the Roman Imperial period. Learn about the urban development of ancient Rome, the relationship between the Pantheon and the nearby baths and public buildings, the construction programs of Emperor Hadrian, and the significance of the Basilica of Neptune within the monumental complex.

Next, descend into the archaeological areas associated with the Basilica of Neptune. During the visit, your guide will explain the origins of the basilica, the architectural remains visible today, ancient construction techniques, decorative elements and surviving masonry, and the connection between the basilica and the surrounding sacred and civic structures.

Observe archaeological features that are normally hidden from the view of most visitors to the Pantheon. Then, learn about the transformation of the area from the Roman Empire to the Christian era, medieval modifications, the Renaissance rediscovery of classical monuments, and modern archaeological investigations that revealed the underground remains.

Following the guided tour, be directed to a separate dedicated entrance to the Pantheon. Enter through a different access point than the one used for the guided archaeological tour. The visit to the Pantheon is self-guided and may be enjoyed at your own pace.

Inside the Pantheon, admire the monumental portico, the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome, the central oculus, the tombs of King Victor Emmanuel II and King Umberto I, the tomb of Raphael, and the high altar and chapels of the Basilica.
