From Hiroshima: Matsuyama Castle, Ishite-ji & Dōgo Onsen

Travel from Hiroshima to Matsuyama in one day and experience a different side of Japan across the Seto Inland Sea.

Meet your guide at Hiroshima Port Terminal and board the high-speed boat to Matsuyama. Instead of taking a standard city walking tour that starts and ends in the same place, this one-way route turns the sea crossing into part of the journey. Watch the islands of the Seto Inland Sea pass by before arriving in Shikoku.

After reaching Matsuyama, continue into the city and visit Matsuyama Castle. Ride the ropeway up to the castle area and explore one of Japan’s remaining original castle towers. From the hilltop, see Matsuyama city, the surrounding mountains, and the direction of the inland sea you crossed in the morning.

After a lunch break near the castle or Okaido area, continue toward the Dōgo district and visit Ishite-ji, Temple 51 of the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage. Walk through its temple grounds, old gates, pilgrimage atmosphere, and cultural details connected with Shikoku’s spiritual travel tradition.

The route then continues to Isaniwa Shrine, a vivid shrine above the Dōgo area known for its long stone approach and historic architecture. From there, walk down into Dōgo Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest hot spring districts. See Dōgo Onsen Honkan from the outside, stroll through the arcade streets, and enjoy the atmosphere of a classic onsen town.

The tour ends near Dōgo Onsen Station in Matsuyama, making it suitable for travelers continuing through Shikoku after Hiroshima.
