Option: Incense Village and Hat Village HALF DAY SMALL GROUP
Begin your journey to Chuong Village, a charming destination known for its stunning traditional art and the production of ‘Non La,’ or conical hats. These hats are iconic symbols of Vietnamese culture, and Chuong Village is renowned for crafting the highest quality ones.
You see artisans at work, creating these elegant hats by hand. Learn about the rich cultural heritage that makes Vietnam so unique. Discover how, in the past, conical hats were used as headwear to protect from sunlight and rain, and how they have now become a fashionable accessory for Vietnamese women.
Next, learn about the process of making conical hats. Discover how bamboo is split into long, skinny parts, soaked in water, and dried in the sun. See how green palm leaves are processed and dried throughout the dry season. Watch as handicraft men add red or pink silks into the hat and sometimes decorate them by embroidering flowers, birds, or other designs.
Meet Thao at her house, located opposite Chuong Pagoda. She has been crafting conical hats for 40 years. “Every villager in Chuong grows up with conical hats, and so did I. My family has been making hats for several generations. I started doing this when I was a kid,” she shares. Crafting these hats is a meticulous process.
Depart for the Quang Phu Cau village, which has been producing incense for more than 100 years. Take a walk to the center of the village and see how locals make incense on the artisanal, family scale.
