Descripción

A historian's walk through how Vilnius actually believed: miracle cures in silver, the dead who wouldn't rot, a city's monster, and a cathedral built directly over Europe's last pagan temple.
They kept a snake in the house and fed it milk by hand. Killing it brought disaster. That's where this walk starts — and it tells you what you need to know about Vilnius: the pagan gods never left. They were built over.

In one square kilometre of the Old Town: a wall of silver body-parts left by people buying a cure from heaven. Bodies in two churches that refused to decay. A painting whose third hand kept bleeding back through the paint no matter how many times someone tried to cover it. A single noble family that turned Protestant, then Catholic, in two generations — and the mob that drove the rest of the Protestants outside the walls for it. And under the cathedral: a fire that, depending who you ask, never really went out, in the last country in Europe to give up its gods.

Led by Dr. Simonas Strelcovas, historian and Associate Professor, on foot, in English. Two hours, small group.

Every stop is viewed from the street. What's behind each door, I tell you myself — a closed door has never stopped a good story.
