Beginning in the newer center, we tune your eye to materials, façades, street grids, and public space, then cross the Stone Bridge into the centuries-old Old Bazaar. Architecture becomes a timeline: caravanserai courtyards and hammams from Ottoman trade routes; churches and mosques in close conversation; 20th-century modernism shaped by the 1963 earthquake and the ambitions of its rebuild; and the recent wave of monumental projects that altered sightlines, plazas, and debates about memory. We pause at key viewpoints for short, digestible stories about merchants’ guilds, crafts, migration, and why certain streets make people move the way they do. You’ll pick up practical culture, too: how to greet vendors, entering shrines respectfully, and how locals navigate markets and alleys.
