Eat your way through George Town on a 3-hour Penang street food walk with a local guide. Try 12 tastings, from kaya toast and nasi kandar to hawker noodles and Nyonya desserts.
Penang is often called Malaysia's food capital, and George Town is where locals come just to eat. On this 3-hour Penang food tour, a licensed local guide walks you through the heritage streets of George Town for 12 tastings of the city's best-loved street food, hawker dishes and Nyonya sweets.

Start the way Penang starts its mornings, at a local café. Try lontong (rice cakes in a coconut and vegetable gravy), roti bakar with butter and kaya (toast with a sweet coconut and egg jam) and a cup of kopi O, the strong black coffee many locals drink with breakfast.

Next, head into one of George Town's old markets for kacang tumbuk, crushed peanuts and sugar rolled in a thin popiah skin, plus some local fruit and traditional biscuits.

Then sit down for nasi kandar, one of Penang's signature dishes, at a restaurant that has been serving it for generations. You get rice with your choice of curries and sides, the gravies poured over the top, and a glass of chai on the side.

Along the way, stop in a quiet back alley for photos with George Town's street art, then try wantan noodles, a hawker favorite of thin egg noodles and dumplings.

Finish with Nyonya desserts and snacks from Penang's Peranakan kitchen: bubur cha cha (sweet potato, yam and sago in coconut milk), pai tee (crisp pastry cups filled with shredded jicama) and colorful kuih nyonya made with coconut, glutinous rice, pandan and palm sugar.

As you walk through the shophouse streets of George Town's UNESCO World Heritage Site, your guide explains how Malay, Chinese, Indian and Peranakan cooking shaped the food on your plate. Your guide orders at every stop and tells you what you're eating, so you get to try Penang dishes you might not know how to order on your own.

This is a small-group, shared walking tour with short walks between stops. Come hungry!
