The Empty Quarter has two great shows a day — sunset and the stars — and this evening is built around both. Your private 4WD driver collects you from your Salalah hotel in a premium air-conditioned vehicle in the mid-afternoon and heads north, while your English-, Arabic- or Hindi-speaking driver-guide keeps the evening unhurried and entirely yours. Arrive at the great dunes of the Rub al Khali as the light turns amber. Climb a high crest for sunset — the sand shifting from gold to rose to violet as the sun sinks into an ocean of dunes — with traditional Arabic coffee and dates served as you watch. Then stay: when the last light fades, the desert reveals its second sky. Far from every city light, the Empty Quarter's night sky is a vault of stars — photograph it, lie back under it, or simply listen to the silence.
