During 1943–1945, the United States Army Air Forces operated extensively from eastern England, especially around Cambridge. The nearby Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial honours many of the airmen killed during these operations.

From 1941 to 1945, the USAAF expanded into a global striking arm with sixteen numbered air forces operating across every theatre. In Europe, the Eighth and Fifteenth Air Forces carried out daylight strategic bombing of Germany, while the Ninth and Twelfth supported Allied ground advances. Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial is the only American World War II military cemetery in the UK. It commemorates U.S. service members who died during operations based in Britain and across Europe during WWII. The site contains the graves of 3,811 American war dead, while more than 5,100 names are inscribed on the Walls of the Missing.
