Begin your day trip to El Chingo Volcano in the department of Santa Ana. This excursion will take you to the peak of the mountain that overlooks both Guatemala and El Salvador.
Start with a 90-minute climb to the peak of the volcano, where there is a beautiful lookout point of the Laguna de Metapán. Then, descend into the crater, where there is a forest, a football field, and plenty of space to explore, eat, and relax.
Finally, cross to the other point of the volcano to encounter more beautiful views and wildlife. Volcán el Chingo is unique as it straddles two countries, with the border clearly marked as a line that runs across the volcano.
The volcano is extinct, meaning that there is a forest in the crater that you can actually descend into for an incredibly tranquil experience. There are very few tourists who venture here, and even fewer that are international, so it is a very unique experience. Many days, you will be the only group at the volcano. It remains one of El Salvador's undiscovered treasures.
