From Zurich: 2-Day GoldenPass Express Self-Guided Train Trip

Day 1:

Take the train from Zurich to Lucerne, where you transfer to the Luzern-Interlaken Express, part of the Scenic Golden Pass line. Pass five fabulously clear mountain lakes, and experience this cogwheel train ascending the steep, winding Brünig Pass, as you head to Interlaken.

Stop for a couple of hours in Interlaken, a traditional resort town between the turquoise waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Stop in Bern for the afternoon. On the Swiss plateau between the Jura and the Alps, Bern's easy-going pace of life makes a welcome change from most capital cities. Dip your toe into the thriving urban swim scene on the River Aare fed by Alpine meltwater, and follow its contours to uncover the UNESCO Old Town nestled within a big loop of the river. Bern Old City is a great to explore, you'll find riverside parks, open air markets and historic monuments. Look out for the varied water fountains and statues distributed around town.

Finally, head back to the station to catch the train back to Zurich.
