Enter the fascinating world of Slovak and global nature in the heart of Bratislava. Discover fauna, flora, forests, caves, the story of our human ancestors, and much more!
The SNM – Natural History Museum focuses on research, documentation and presentation of the diversity of the natural environment (animate and inanimate nature) primarily within the territory of Slovakia. Its collections (containing approximately 2.5 million objects) make it an important natural science museum in Europe and the biggest of its kind in Slovakia.
⠀
What can you explore during your visit? - 7 in 1: as part of a single entry you can visit 5 specialized permanent expositions, 1 temporary exhibition + 1 fascinating ongoing exhibition on non-natural-sciences topics.
⠀
1st Floor:
Anthropology Exposition - Our most recent, modern, and interactive exposition, which is very catchy for children as well. It is especially focused on the evolution of human species, from our primate ancestors to Homo Sapiens Sapiens. You can learn our link with apes, learn about skeletal deformations and injuries, uncover the migrations and genetic information of our ancestors, see Slovak finds of Neanderthals, cave art, and more.
⠀
2nd Floor: ⠀
Paleontology Exposition - Discover the evolution of animal and plant species from the emergence of the Earth all the way to a more recent Prehistory. You can see fossils of various oddly-shaped creatures, dinosaurs, mammoths, cave bear, etc.
⠀
Slovak Biodiversity - our most encompassing permanent exposition. It is focused especially on Slovak animal and plant species, following the logic of the biggest 5 animal groups - fishes, amphibians, reptiles, and particularly numerous displays of birds and mammals. Experience the diversity of Slovak forest deers, wild pigs, and owls. Do not miss felines and other carnivores, such as bears, lynxes, badgers, the European bison, insects, and much more!
Mineralogy Exposition - more than 700 kinds of minerals and valuable rocks. Particularly interesting are the bright color spectra of quartz, precious stones, and real meteorites.
⠀
3rd Floor:
Biodiversity of the Earth - a special permanent exposition following the importance of biodiversity within micro-and-macro habitats all around the globe. 7 dioramas cover 7 different living areas of the world - from the Amazon jungle, through the Arctica - to the Gobi Desert. How do the species depend on each other and what is important to know in order to preserve these fragile ecosystems? Some of the most iconic exponates are: the African elephant skull, the biggest seed in plant world Lodoicea Maldivica, Albinotic animals, the biggest insects on the planet, and more.
Temporary Paleontology Exhibition "Touch the Past" - a completely touch-free exhibition open primary, but not only, to visitors with visual impairment. Included are 3D fossil models, gypsum models, real fossils, and games for your paleontologists!
⠀
Bonus exhibition currently ongoing - Coffee? Yes, Italian-Style! - focused on the technology of Italian coffee making.
