The story of the museum itself is part of Ankara's modern history. The first museum collections in the city began to develop in the early 1920s, following Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's vision of establishing a central museum dedicated to the civilizations of Anatolia. As the collection expanded, archaeological material was eventually brought together in the restored Bedesten and caravanserai buildings that now house the museum. Restoration began in 1938, and the museum spaces gradually opened during the following decades.
