Discover Sintra's history and architecture on a full-day tour. Visit Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and the seaside town of Cascais.
Begin your tour with a visit to the romantic town of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore its historic center, where buildings and vestiges from various eras and cultural movements remain.
Next, head to the Pena Palace, a Romanticist palace in São Pedro de Penaferrim. The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
Continue to Quinta da Regaleira, a manor house located near the historic center of Sintra. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the "Cultural Landscape of Sintra". Along with the other palaces in the area such as the Quinta do Relógio, Pena, Monserrate and Seteais palaces, it is considered one of the principal tourist attractions of Sintra.
The property consists of a Romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions. The palace is also known as "The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire", which is based on the nickname of its best known former owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. The palace was designed by the Italian architect Luigi Manini.
Next, visit the seaside town of Praia das Azenhas do Mar. A beach of golden sands and the mouth of the river that gives it its name, it is said that in autumn the river carried many apples from the farms it crossed to the sandy area, giving the beach its name.
On the left bank of the mouth of the Rio das Maçãs, on a rise of land called Alto da Vigia, there is believed to have been a temple dedicated to the Sun and the Moon.
In the 16th century, André de Resende and Francisco de Holanda, among others, are believed to have come into contact with the ruins of this sanctuary, as the former collected some epigraphic inscriptions and the latter, in his book "Da Fábrica que Falece à Cidade de Lisboa" (From the Failed Factory to the City of Lisbon), imagines a reconstruction of the ancient Temple of the Sun and the Moon.
Continue to the Miradouro Das Azenhas Do Mar, a viewpoint built on cliffs and flanked by the picturesque scenery of small blue-rimmed houses, built into the rock face with the sea below against the rock wall. Its elevated location offers a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean. It's breathtaking.
Visit the westernmost point of the European continent with its incredible cliffs and wild landscapes. Finally, visit Boca do Inferno, a rock that has an opening through which the waves beat violently creating an incredible spectacle of nature.
