Explore the Champadevi trail on a day hike from Kathmandu. Visit the cave shrine of Guru Padmasambhava, enjoy panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley, and see the Dakshinkali Temple.
Begin your day with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to the trailhead, passing through the ancient Newari settlements of Khokana and Bungmati. Arrive at the trailhead and set off on your hike through small pockets of traditional villages where life exists in ways little changed by centuries.
Wave to the local children as you pass by and get a sense of Nepali society’s friendly welcome. Continue along the trail as it gradually slopes, passing through increasingly dense stands of pine that provide relief during warmer months.
As you hike uphill, see Buddhist shrine stones (chorten) lined by fluttering prayer flags in the breeze. Blue, white, red, green, and yellow square bits of material representing the five elements have prayers and mantras sent around the globe by each flutter in the breeze.
Reach the top and be rewarded with panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley, surrounded by villages and the resplendent Himalayan range in the background.
