Description

Discover Bhutan's artistic traditions on a private tour in Thimphu. Visit the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, learn about papermaking, enjoy a traditional lunch explore the Royal Textile Academy.
Begin your day at the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, where young artisans undergo 4 to 6 years of rigorous training in Bhutan’s 13 traditional crafts. Walk through live classrooms to observe students sketching sacred geometry for Thangka paintings, carving intricate deities into timber, stitching silk brocades, and molding clay figures. Visit the on-site gallery shop to purchase authentic, certified artwork directly made by the students.

Next, head to a small cottage factory near the river to watch paper craftsmen transform the bark of the Daphne bush into durable, tree-free paper (Deh-sho). Learn how the bark is soaked, boiled, hand-pulled onto bamboo screens, and sun-dried. Try dipping the screen yourself to make your own paper sheet.

Enjoy a traditional lunch at an authentic Thimphu restaurant. Taste regional specialties such as Ema Datshi (chili and local cheese), red rice, buckwheat dumplings (Hoentay), and warm butter tea (Suja).

After lunch, visit the Royal Textile Academy (RTA), founded under the patronage of Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck. Observe women master weavers operating traditional back-strap and foot-pedal looms. Learn about complex pattern names like Kishuthara (intricate silk brocades) and explore the royal textile gallery displaying crowns, dresses, and ceremonial attire worn by Bhutan’s Monarchs.

Finally, stroll along the bamboo-roofed Centenary Craft Bazaar in the heart of Thimphu city. Interact directly with local artisans selling hand-carved wooden mask cups (Dapa), woven textiles, yak wool scarves, prayer wheels, incense sticks, and brass statues.
