Description

Live Rio like a Carioca, from the energy of Ipanema beach to the calm, hill-framed lagoon: beach bars, historic botecos, and plate after plate of local favorite bites, from caipirinhas to açaí.
In Rio, food is woven into life: shared with friends, eaten in lively places, and usually picked at bite by bite at the beach or around a boteco table. This walk follows the way Cariocas actually spend their days: at the beach, at the bar, at the corner bakery, and by the water as the afternoon slows down. You'll eat plenty along the way, but the real point is the rhythm.

We meet at a lively beachfront bar facing the sand in Ipanema, the kind of open, buzzing spot where locals gather after a day at the beach. We start the way they do: an ice-cold drink and a round of petiscos to share.

From there we head into the neighborhood and sit down at the bar where "The Girl from Ipanema" was written, still a neighborhood landmark. Here we try some of Brazil's favorite grilled classics, and toast with a caipirinha, the cachaça-and-lime drink that fuels every Rio day.

Next comes an Ipanema bakery that has been open since 1911, where locals stop in for breakfast, a late-night snack, and everything in between. You'll try pão de queijo, the warm, chewy cheese bread every Carioca grew up on.

Then the city changes pace. We leave the beach behind for the calm of the lagoon, framed by green hills. At a boteco serving since 1934, with German roots and views over the water, we share iconic dishes found on every Carioca bar table.

We finish the way Rio does: with a bowl of thick, icy açaí by the lagoon.

Like every Sherpa Food Tour, this route was designed around how locals really live. Join early in your trip and you'll leave with more than a full stomach: a feel for how the city moves, and a sense of where Cariocas go on their own.
