Description
Embark on a wildlife expedition from Bogotá to Chingaza National Park. Learn about the Andean spectacled bear, enjoy a guided hike, and savor a mountain picnic lunch.
Begin your day with a convenient pickup from your hotel or residence in Bogotá. Travel in a comfortable car toward the eastern Andes. During the scenic 2-hour drive, your guide will introduce you to the ecological importance of Colombia’s páramo ecosystems, the history of the Muisca civilization, and the conservation story of the Andean bear. Enjoy light morning refreshments, including fresh fruit, Colombian coffee or herbal tea, and artisanal pastries.
Upon arrival at the Siecha sector of Lagunas de Siecha, receive a short wildlife and safety briefing. Your guide will explain bear behavior and feeding patterns, how to identify tracks and signs, ethical wildlife observation practices, and park conservation rules. This region is one of the most important protected habitats for the Andean bear in Colombia.
Embark on a high-Andean trek through misty páramo landscapes dotted with giant frailejones, wetlands, and sacred lagoons. Your naturalist guide will interpret native flora and medicinal plants, birdlife (Andean ducks, hummingbirds, raptors), bear feeding trees and scratch marks, and signs of recent wildlife activity. Stop at strategic observation points where bears have been previously recorded feeding on bromeliads or puya plants.
While sightings are never guaranteed, early departures and careful route planning significantly increase chances. High-powered binoculars, a spotting scope for distant viewing, wildlife tracking interpretation, and photography assistance are provided. Quiet observation periods are built into the itinerary to allow for undisturbed wildlife viewing. Even if the bear remains unseen, the journey through its habitat offers profound insight into conservation challenges and ecosystem balance.
After the hike, enjoy a curated Andean picnic in nature or at a rustic ecological refuge. Typical options include traditional Colombian soup (vegetarian option available), lentils or seasonal vegetables, handmade arepas, fresh juice (lulo, blackberry, or passionfruit), and Colombian panela beverage. Dietary restrictions are accommodated with advance notice.
At the Siecha lagoons, sacred to the Muisca people, take time for landscape photography, a short meditative pause, and cultural storytelling about indigenous cosmology. The dramatic high-altitude scenery offers exceptional photography opportunities.
Depart from the park in the afternoon and return to Bogotá, with light refreshments provided during the drive back.
