Description

Explore Zagreb’s flavours and heritage on a small-group walk. Taste traditional dishes, hear the stories behind their recipes, and discover a country on the border between East and West.
Dive into this guided small-group food and heritage tour in a country where East and West have been meeting and intertwining for centuries. Food is a universal language, but to really understand it, we also need to understand the past and the circumstances in which each recipe was created. On this tour, we don’t just list historical facts – we interpret heritage. We connect people, places and dishes into one story, so that what you see and taste feels like a meaningful whole, not just a checklist of stops.
This Zagreb gastro journey is a trip back in time that links the city’s history with its everyday food culture. Along the way, you’ll hear how one of Croatia’s most famous national dishes developed, which dessert managed to win over the whole country in just a few decades, and what kind of dishes still appear on local tables today – and why. You’ll get a sense of how history and everyday life shaped what people here cook and eat.

During the walk, we’ll move between elegant squares, green parks, historic streets and the city’s central market area. We’ll talk about rulers, soldiers and ordinary citizens, and how their lives are reflected in recipes that survived to this day. You’ll visit a traditional market where locals buy fresh ingredients, try something sweet at a local pastry spot, and sit down in a small retro-modern restaurant popular with people who live and work in the area, as well as with curious visitors searching for authentic flavours.

We’ll also touch on Zagreb’s architectural and cultural landmarks, linking them to the city’s culinary story: from grand hotels of the early 20th century to lively café culture and the role of simple, comforting dishes in everyday life. Towards the end of the tour, you’ll taste a traditional Croatian tart with deep historical roots and then we’ll finish by raising a glass together, toasting to good company and good food.

By joining this tour, you’ll save time and get a real overview of Zagreb in just a few hours: you’ll see many of the main sights, get essential background on the city and the country, and, of course, taste plenty – if not a little too much – of local and authentic food.

More than anything, you’ll leave with the feeling that you’ve understood not just what people here eat, but also the stories and heritage that wrote all those recipes.
