Your local birding guide chooses the reserve on the day based on the species you most want to spot, drawing on years of firsthand fieldwork in the Monteverde cloud forest.You'll set out at 07:45 AM, when bird activity peaks, and spend three focused hours in the forest. Home to more than 400 bird species — including the Resplendent Quetzal, the Three-wattled Bellbird and 30 species of hummingbirds — Monteverde is one of the richest birding destinations in the Americas. Between September and May, North American migratory species pass through, dramatically increasing the number of birds you can add to your list in a single morning.The group is capped at 8 people, keeping trails quiet and giving everyone real time at the scope. Your guide uses a laser pointer to pinpoint birds tucked high in the canopy — a small detail that makes a big difference when you're trying to spot a motionless quetzal against the leaves.You don't need to be an expert. You just need to love birds and be willing to start early. Bring binoculars, a raincoat and comfortable shoes — the forest does the rest.
