Walk through more than 2,000 years of Costa Rica’s history at the Jade Museum, home to the world’s largest public collection of pre-Columbian jade.
Located in the heart of San José, the Museo del Jade y de la Cultura Precolombina offers a powerful introduction to Costa Rica’s ancient civilizations through a modern, immersive museum experience. This is not just a collection of artifacts, it’s a carefully curated journey into the beliefs, rituals, and daily life of the societies that shaped the region long before European arrival.
As you explore the museum’s thematic galleries, you’ll discover why jade was considered a sacred material, symbolizing power, fertility, and spiritual connection. The collection features nearly 7,000 archaeological pieces, including finely carved jade pendants, ceremonial axes, ceramics, stone sculptures, and gold objects dating mainly from 500 BC to 800 AD.
Each gallery is designed to guide you step by step through Costa Rica’s pre-Columbian past, combining clear storytelling with visually striking displays. You’ll learn how jade traveled across ancient Mesoamerican trade routes, how it was transformed into ritual objects, and why it played such an important role in political and religious life.
The museum’s contemporary design, inaugurated in 2014, makes the experience comfortable and accessible for all visitors. Elevators, ramps, and climate-controlled spaces allow you to explore at your own pace, making it an ideal cultural activity for families, history lovers, and first-time visitors to San José.
Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours discovering one of Costa Rica’s most important cultural landmarks, perfect as a standalone visit or combined with nearby museums and historic sites in downtown San José.
