Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou – Tinghir
Your trip through the desert starts early in the morning when you leave Marrakech and cross the beautiful High Atlas Mountains over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m). Take in the winding roads and wide views of traditional Berber towns spread out across the mountains.
Visit the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, which is on the UNESCO list. It is one of Morocco's most famous fortified towns and has been used as the setting for movies like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Keep going through Ouarzazate, which is sometimes called the "Hollywood of Africa." Then, take the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs and go through the Skoura Oasis and Rose Valley. When you get to Tinghir, you'll find a quiet town surrounded by palm trees and watched over by old kasbahs.
Day 2: Tinghir – Todgha Gorges – Merzouga Desert
After breakfast, explore the spectacular Todgha Gorges, a natural wonder with towering cliffs that rise up to 300 meters. You’ll have time to enjoy a short walk along the gorge and admire the lush oasis below.
Continue your journey through Tinjdad and Erfoud, famous for fossil workshops and desert landscapes, before arriving at Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes.
In the late afternoon, begin your camel caravan and ride across the golden dunes just as the sun sets, painting the Sahara in shades of gold and orange. Arrive at your desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with Moroccan mint tea and a delicious dinner under the stars. Enjoy traditional Berber drumming around the campfire before spending the night in your private tent amid the serene desert silence.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Optional 4x4 Experience – Desert Hotel Stay
Get up early to see the beautiful sunrise over the dunes, and then have breakfast at the camp.
Today, you can go on an off-road 4x4 desert journey to see more of the area around Merzouga. When you get to Khamlia village, the Gnawa musicians will greet you with their soulful desert sounds. You can also stop at nomadic Berber families to learn about their traditional way of life. You can also see the Mifis fossil site or have tea in a hidden oasis in the dunes.
In the afternoon, go back to your hotel or place of stay in Merzouga village. There, you can unwind, swim (if your hotel has a pool), and enjoy a quiet evening before your long trip the next day.
