Description
Discover the flavors and traditions of the Andes on a 2-day tour from Quito. Shop for fresh ingredients at a community market, learn to cook traditional dishes, and explore the Otavalo Artisan Market.
Day 1: From the Soil to the Soul
Begin your journey by diving into the vibrant sights and scents of a local community market. Guided by a local expert, meet indigenous farming families and purchase fresh, native ingredients directly from them. Learn to identify rare Andean potatoes, heirloom corn, while directly supporting the community's economy.
Next, be welcomed into the private kitchen of an indigenous culinary keeper. Together, use the morning's harvest to prepare a traditional meal using ancestral techniques. After cooking, sit down to share a beautiful, organic lunch brimming with flavor, history, and identity.
Spend a peaceful evening slowing down to the rhythm of the mountains, sharing stories by the fire, and spending the night in a cozy, community-run lodge.
Day 2: The Art of the Weavers
Wake up to a fresh mountain breakfast before heading into the crown jewel of Andean trade. Explore one of South America’s largest and most historic indigenous markets at the famous Plaza de Ponchos. Have ample time to wander the colorful maze of hand-woven ponchos, intricate embroidery, unique jewelry, and tapestries, interacting directly with the master artisans keeping centuries-old traditions alive.
After lunch on your own, enjoy a scenic drive back to Quito, watching the volcanic peaks of the Andes fade into the horizon.
